Borongan surf tilt offers biggest prize money in PH sport history


TACLOBAN CITY—Surf in the City in Borongan, Eastern Samar offers a purse of 1 million pesos, the biggest prize in the history of Philippine surfing during its 3rd edition of the national surfing competition from November 26 to December 3, 2022 .

“I am grateful to the leaders of our local government for their unwavering and united support of this sports movement,” Borongan Town Information Office Manager Rupert Ambil said Thursday (October 27th).

The annual Surf in the City will bring together the best surfers from across the country.

“We hope this will become a model for other sports as well as a great foundation for our vision to professionalize surfing and produce the next Filipino surfing athlete who will win medals at the Olympics,” he added. .

The top prize for the longboard and shortboard categories is set at P80,000 for 1st place, P50,000 for 2nd place, while two 3rd placers will each receive P25,000.

Additionally, four 5th placers and eight 9th placers will receive P10,000 and P5,000 respectively.

In the groms division, a surfing category for 18 and under, winners will receive P20,000 for 1st place, P15,000 for 2nd place, and P8,000 for the two 3rd placers.

“We are thrilled to welcome back our surfers from all over the Philippines. We look forward to sharing our beautiful and very own surf ground with them, as well as the usual Boronganon hospitality and hosting top-notch events” , Borongan City Mayor Dayan Agda added.

Meanwhile, Ambil said the competition will ‘narrow the gap between prize money received in the men’s and women’s division by giving the same amount to the winners of both categories’.

The annual Surf in the City will bring together the best surfers from across the country as they compete for Stage 3 of the national surfing competition sanctioned by the United Philippine Surfing Association, the national sports body for surfing in the Philippines.

This year, Surf in the City is jointly organized by the Borongan Municipal Government, the Eastern Samar Provincial Government led by Governor Ben Evardone and the office of MP Maria Fe Abunda from the province’s only legislative district.
