Steel is being built at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City as construction crews convert this former Macy’s store into Dick’s massive “House of Sport” complex.

Dick’s Sporting Goods announced plans for its biggest store six weeks ago. It will be located at the south end of the mall near Harry L. Drive.

The 140,000 square foot store would serve as the anchor for what the developers call “Oakdale Commons”. It should open next year.

The Oakdale Mall Macy’s department store closed in early 2017. Construction workers began clearing the interior of the Macy’s site in July.

In recent weeks, trucks have hauled tons of earth to be used as fill along the east side of the mall near Reynolds Road.

Spark JC LLC acquired ownership of the mall for $7.5 million. The development group is a joint venture of the Matthews and Newman families.

The Oakdale Commons project receives $10 million from the US federal bailout. Broome County and Union City have each approved the allocation of $5 million in what’s called “Covid Relief Funds” for infrastructure work at the Johnson City site.

Extensive renovations have been made to the north end of the mall with the development of the Lourdes Hospital Fitness Center and the Beer Tree Brew Co. restaurant and production facilities.
