ORLANDO, Fla. – It’s another historic day at Special Olympics USA.
Athletes from Team Florida prepare to compete in the first-ever surf event at the games at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon.

Several of the athletes have been surfing for over a decade, but mostly on the ocean.
The competition will be a little different for Team Florida, moving from the ocean to a wave pool. They have spent the past two months training and planning their time in the water.

Special Olympics Florida launched its surfing program in 2009, and South Carolina is the only other state to have a team competing this year.
