Olympic debut of skateboarding and sport climbing could boost business in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Virginia. – Four sports make their Olympic debuts in Tokyo: skateboarding, sport climbing, karate and surfing.

Lynchburg business owners hope the games bring attention to these sports.

The Scene 3 boardshop expects the early days of skateboarding to generate more interest.

“I think most people are happy to see [skateboarding] over there and excited about the growth he’s experiencing, ”said Nate Hall, who works at the workshop.

Hall says skateboarding tends to see waves of popularity; and Scene 3 is already seeing a boost in business from the COVID-19 pandemic, as people are spending more time outdoors.

“I think it’s a really exciting time for skateboarding. I think it’s a really positive step forward, ”said Hall.

And he thinks the Olympic kickflips will start new business.

“I think we will definitely see an increase down the road after the Tokyo Games.”

Sport climbing will make its Olympic debut next week.

JB Askew, director of Rise Up Climbing in downtown Lynchburg, is expecting new clients even if it’s just a one-time climb.

“Maybe they went to a small wall at the fair, or something like that; but not realizing that people do it for fun very regularly and that it is a real sport that is taken seriously around the world, ”Askew said.

The difficulty depends on the colorful route you take.

Askew says that in addition to the income, he hopes the world stage will bring more attention to the sport.

“I hope this will attract a lot of customers and our current customers will be even more excited to climb,” Askew said.
